ABOUT ME

My name is Rachelle Kampen and my passion is exploring creativity through music. I have been a working musician in San Diego since 2003 performing with choirs, instrumentalists, vocalists, colleges and churches in addition to my private teaching studio.

Classical piano and choral singing was my introduction to the world of creativity and performance. Today I focus on the intersection of classical virtuosity with modern musical styles and personal creative freedom.

I believe each individual’s unique perspective is fundamental in creating music and art that will shape both personal growth and our collective future.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My goal as a teacher and coach is to give students of all ages the technical tools to express their creative voice.

Lessons are tailored to the student’s interests, experience level and goals. Beginners learn the fundamentals of reading music, learning by ear, effective practice techniques and healthy physical habits.

Practice expectations are also individualized. We will discuss your or your child’s goals and available time restrictions, and come up with an ideal practice routine together.

I also provide support for the emotional and psychological challenges faced by musicians of all ages, both professional and amateur. Many of us struggle with performance anxiety and perfectionism. It’s also not unusual to carry emotional baggage from previous teachers. Having experienced these challenges myself, I prioritize supporting other musicians through the process.

EDUCATIONAL SPECIALTIES

NEURODIVERGENCE

AND MENTAL HEALTH

While I am not a medical professional, I particularly enjoy working with special needs students and those with mental health challenges.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and bipolar disorder and have spent years receiving professional treatment and learning to care for my own mental health. I find it very fulfilling to support students who share similar experiences.

Studying music has proven benefits for treating depression and anxiety, as well as ASD and special needs individuals. Pursuing a creative goal is an excellent way to connect with one’s emotions; break a large project into manageable steps; regulate the frustration and self-judgment that often accompanies the learning process; and share your story with others.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional.

lgbtq musicians

As a lesbian myself I prioritize providing my LGBTQ students with both an excellent musical education and an example of a thriving queer adult.

San Diego is overall a wonderfully affirming city, but life will always provide unique challenges for LGBTQ youth. Neurodivergence, mental health challenges and the emotional rollercoaster of working through queer identity commonly overlap. I am proud to lend any support I can to other queer people of all ages on their creative journey.
