Topics to explore
MUSIC READING
I am an expert in guiding children and adults alike to comfortably sight read piano music of all levels. Students will become comfortable with melodic and rhythmic patterns, solfège, and harmonic structures.
EAR TRAINING / AURAL SKILLS
Listening is a musician’s most important skill. Just as children are taught to recognize colors, shapes and letters, sounds can be studied. Students will learn to hear and sing melodic and rhythmic patterns, distinguish between chord qualities, utilize solfège and identify for chord changes in their music.
IMPROVISATION
Learn to express your own creative ideas. Improvisation is incorporated into beginner lessons from week one, to promote personal expression from the start. Students will develop their own ideas in addition to learning from past masters.
HEALTHY TECHNIQUE
Free, natural movement is essential to playing the piano. Technique is only important as a vehicle for creating the sounds and styles we want. My approach is to learn technique through repertoire rather than drills, with musically appealing exercises assigned as needed to promote technical growth.
MUSIC THEORY & HISTORY
Keyboard music has evolved through countless styles and harmonic conventions in its more than four hundred year history. Today pianists use the principles of music theory as a framework for understanding the intentions of past composers and songwriters. Students will learn music theory and how each concept developed in music history.
performance PRACTICE
Student recitals are offered at least twice a year. Beginners will get the chance to practice public presentation from a young age in a supportive environment. I help musicians of all levels work through performance anxiety to fully embrace presenting their music on stage. A variety of performance traditions will be offered, from classical piano recitals to rock band keyboards.
