Topics to explore
sight singing
Learn to sight read vocal music. Using scale degrees and interval and chord recognition, you can become proficient in singing notated vocal music.
singing by ear
While singing by ear comes more naturally to some than others, it’s an important skill for every vocalist to master. Learn to aurally recognize patterns to learn music quickly and confidently.
healthy technique
No matter what vocal style you’re interested in learning, a free and healthy physicality is fundamental. Lessons focus on accurate body mapping, internal kinesthetic awareness, relaxation techniques and becoming comfortable with the body as a musical instrument. Learn to use the structures of your head, neck and shoulders to create a strong, resonant voice that expresses your individual style.
variety of styles and genres
I specialize in creating strong fundamentals of technique and musicianship using a variety of musical styles. Students are encouraged to choose music that interests them personally. Additionally, I can provide selections from various genres to try new styles. Repertoire can range from popular music to musical theatre, folk songs, jazz standards and introductory classical styles.
HARMONY AND MUSICAL IDIOMS
A thorough understanding of the harmonic and stylistic conventions of their chosen genre makes a huge difference for any singer. Lessons include analysis of the structure and chord progressions of the student’s music. An overview of the song’s history and genre will also be covered.
performance
I offer at least two student recitals every year. Participation is not mandatory but is highly encouraged. Whether you are an experienced performer looking to polish your stage presence, or completely new to public performance, our recitals are welcoming and supportive. Students also have the opportunity to sing with a band (guitar, bass, drums, keys) comprised of teachers and fellow students.
